If you do the Sappling way of that quest, the reward is a not so cool, new small tree that NEVER grows as big as the original Gildergreen - no matter if you wait for weeks in-game for it to grow. I think the unofficial patch fixed the bug but if you don't have the patch or did the quest without it you're stuck with a dead tree. That sapling deserves to grow into a nice big healthy proper replacement for the dead tree you helped get rid of.
